IFSC Code

IFS Code or IFSC Code stands for the Indian Financial System Code. It is an alphanumeric code that is mandatory for electronic currency transactions in India. A code distinguishes each bank office partaking in the three primary Payment and settlement frameworks in India: the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), and Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) frameworks.

The IFSC comprises of 11-character code. The initial four alphabetic characters indicate the bank name. At the same time, the last six characters are usually numeric but can be alphabetic also and indicate branch. The fifth character is 0 (zero) and held for sometime later. NEFT and RTGS frameworks use IFSC Codes to course the messages to the destination banks/branches.

MICR Code

It is a code printed on cheques using special Magnetic Ink Character Recognition technology (MICR). This enables the identification of the cheques for faster processing of the transaction.

A MICR code is a 9-digit code. Its role is to identify the bank and branch participating in an Electronic Clearing System (ECS).

The first three digits of the code represent a particular city (City Code). They are in alignment with the PIN code we use for postal addresses in India. The following 3 digits of the code represent a specific bank (Bank Code). At the same time, the last 3 digits represent the branch (Branch Code). You can find the MICR code at the bottom of a cheque leaf, next to the cheque number. One can also easily find it printed on the first page of a bank savings account passbook.

One needs to mention the MICR code while filling up various financial transaction forms. These forms are investment forms or SIP forms or for transferring funds.
